Wood shavings are thin curls or flakes of wood produced as a byproduct from planing, milling, or turning lumber. Unlike woodchips, they are softer, lighter, thinner, and curl-like in shape.
How Are Wood Shavings Made?
Wood shavings are generated from:
- Wood planers or jointers during the smoothing of lumber
- Lathe machines in woodworking
- Sawmill operations
- Common wood species: Pine, spruce, cedar, fir, aspen, poplar
Difference: Wood Shavings vs. Woodchips
Feature | Wood Shavings | Woodchips |
---|---|---|
Appearance | Thin, curly, soft flakes | Chunky, irregular, rough pieces |
Source | Planing, turning, milling | Chipping of logs, branches |
Texture | Lightweight, fluffy | Dense, rough |
Main Uses | Animal bedding, packaging, composting | Paper, energy, mulch, particleboard |
Absorbency | High | Medium |
Main Uses of Wood Shavings
A. Animal Bedding
- Used in farms, stables, pet enclosures (e.g., poultry, horses, rabbits)
- Highly absorbent, reduces odor and moisture
- Preferred wood: Pine and aspen (low in harmful oils)
B. Packaging Material
- Used for shock absorption in crates and boxes for delicate goods
- Eco-friendly alternative to foam or plastic
C. Composting & Soil Amendment
- Adds carbon-rich material to compost
- Improves aeration and reduces compaction in garden soil
D. DIY & Crafts
- Used in wood filler, eco-bricks, fire starters, and some resin crafts
